Cowboy Up

Madeline Curr is a photographer and stylist who works on her family's cattle property. This is North West Queensland through her eyes.

Tell us a bit about yourself- what do you do when you're not taking photographs?

I work full time on my family's branded wagyu beef business that I helped found, called Curr & Co Beef. I think in most rural businesses everyone tends to do a little bit of everything, which I definitely do: from mustering and marketing to cattle work and photography. We recently sold our property near Julia Greek past of Mount Isa so our main base is now near Toowoomba on the Darling Downs. I also enjoy fashion design and have a label PonyBoy, and love styling photo shoots as a creative outlet.

You bring a really fresh energy to photographing north western Queensland. What are your influences?

I picked up my love for film photography when I worked in the fashion industry in Sydney, but I wouldn't say any one person is an influence on my work. The Outback influences me to a tee. I'm constantly inspired out here, which is why it's all I photograph.

I shoot with a Canon film camera I bought on Gumtree from an old man in Sydney. It meant a lot to him and so it feels very symbolic to me. I mostly shoot with black and white film because I love the older-styled look that it gives. I think vintage cowboy is definitely my favourite vibe.
